Background

In March 2000, residents and service providers formed the “Coalition of Northeast Neighborhoods” (CNN) to address the increased criminal activity within our community. With assistance from other Weed & Seed sites, CNN Weed & Seed received its designation in March 2001 from the U.S. Department of Justice.

CNN Weed & Seed Purpose

To coordinate the concentrated efforts of the residents, community leaders, faith-based organizations, business owners and agencies into developing a comprehensive plan that will be designed and implemented to prevent and control crime and improve the overall quality of life in our community.

Weed & Seed Initiative

Weed and Seed is an initiative to help communities in developing a comprehensive strategy to decrease, prevent and control crime and improve the overall quality of life.  The goals of Weed and Seed are to control violent crime; drug trafficking and drug-related crime in targeted high-crime neighborhoods and provide a safe environment free of crime and drugs for residents. 

Weed & Seed Partnerships

Weed and Seed strategy brings together federal, state and local crime fighting agencies, social service providers, representatives of the public and private sectors, prosecutors, business owners and neighborhood residents under the shared goal of weeding out violent crime and gang activity while seeding in social service and economic revitalization. 

Coalition of the Northeast Neighborhood Weed & Seed

In March 2001, CNN received its official recognition as a Weed and Seed site.  The CNN Weed and Seed has four components:

• Law Enforcement
• Community Policing
• Prevention, Intervention and Treatment (Social Services)
• Neighborhood Restoration
• CNN Weed and Seed Boundaries

CNN Weed & Seed boundaries are 42^nd Street on the North, 30^th Street on the South, Arlington Avenue on the East and Keystone Avenue on the West as well as the area bounded by Massachusetts Avenue on the Southeast, 30th Street on the North and Sherman Drive on the West.
